The Ancestors
So, for this edition of my blog, I have been cheered on by my guides to talk about my ancestors a bit and share some new and interesting information I have recently learned. While visiting with my parents some weeks ago, I was finally allowed to look through some information I had never seen before about my fathers side of the family. I know all about my mother’s side of the family back to the early 1400’s, thanks to my Grandfather, who spent about 40 years painstakingly researching each birth or marriage certificate from here in Canada and overseas. This was in the days long before the internet and companies like Ancestry existed.
Smith is a difficult name to research, especially in Scotland which is where they were from. I had always known that Matthew was a family first name. My Grandpa’s uncle who came to Canada with the family was named Matthew. I did not know that he was named after his father, my Great, Great Grandfather, also Matthew. The most amazing thing about the information I found, was that there were also pictures of my Great, Great Grandfather Matthew and written information about his life. This is all thanks to a treasure, known in our family as Matthew’s book.
My Great Uncle Matthew was a writer and artist. His book is now very delicate with the passage of time. It is filled with family information, but also with information about the time in which he lived. One of the most interesting articles he wrote in the book was about the sinking of the Titanic as events were happening in real time.
I had always been drawn to the name Matthew. So much so that when I was expecting my first child, I just knew that they should be called Matthew. They turned out to be a she, so she was named the only female version of the name, Madison. It really means son of Matthew, but, in recent years it has become a name able to be used by boys or girls.
Knowing where we come from, can give us grounding in this world and help us to grow and move forward to learn the lesson we were sent here to learn, without distraction. Whether it is our close ancestors or our ancestors of the distant past, the connection is important.
Peace and Happiness
